Need for Yearly Mammography Questioned in New Research
 

OBJECTIVE: determine if yearly mammograms were better at catching early breast cancer, compared to mammograms given every two years. METHODS: retrospective review of 7840 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer or ductal carcinoma. RESULTS: in women over age 50, mammography every two years was just as good as mammography every year. However, in women in their 40's, yearly mammography was found to be beneficial. CONCLUSION: in certain groups (women in their 50's), mammography every two years, instead of every year, may be reasonable. For women in their 40's, yearly mammography may be best.
