Antibiotic Use Down, but Problems Still Remain
This study of antibiotic prescriptions in the US during the 1990's found that overall, prescriptions of antibiotics were down--a desirable trend. The total number of antibiotic prescriptions in 1991-1992 was 230 million, and in 1998-1999 was 190 million, an overall decrease of more than 15%. However, the total number of second-generation antibiotics (those most likely to cause high level bacterial resistance), actually increased from approximately 55 million to more than 75 million prescriptions. Comment: both decreasing the total number, and decreasing the frequency of second-generation antibiotic use are important in lowering the rate of high level bacterial resistance.
