Sr-89 Effectiveness in Relieving Pain in Prostate Cancer
This retrospective review found that of 14 prostate cancer patients with pain that was resistent to chemotherapy, 8 had pain relief with Sr-89 therapy. Two patients (14%) were able to stop analgesia medications completely. The median duration of response was 56 days. Side effects included bone marrow toxicity (6 patients required a red blood cell transfusion), thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. Of note, the leukopenia was mild and not associated with an increased rate of infections. COMMENT: the abstract does not detail the dosages of Sr-89 used. Perhaps an equivalent response could be obtained from using lower doses. The side-effects are significant, however, the benefit of getting of analgesic medications completely is also significant.
