PET Scans Reveal More Metastases In Esophageal Cancer Patients

PET scans have been shown to reveal 15% more disease sites than clinical exam or CT, and should be considered in all patients with esophageal cancer both before and after therapy. "With respect to staging prior to initial treatment or post therapy, I think we are moving toward guidelines or recommendations that PET scanning should be mandatory", Dr. Valerie Rusch said. Comment: PET scanning is probably of most benefit early in the workup of esophageal cancer. It is known to be more sensitive at picking up metastatic disease than other modalities, including clinical exam, biochemical markers, CT, and MRI. [ Family Practice News, 1-May-2003;33(9) ]
