BONE SCAN: Elderly man with left hip pain after recent surgery
This elderly gentleman has a history of previous left hip pinning approximately 1.5 months ago for possible pathologic fracture. Concern from the referring surgeon is possible pelvic fracture or pin loosening. There is a question of a recent fall, but the history from the family and the nursing home conflict. What is your diagnosis?

Re: BONE SCAN: Elderly man with left hip pain and recent fall
heterotopic calcification, arising either idiopathically or as a result of small bone fragments in the soft tissues from either the recent fracture or from small bone chips getting into the soft tissues during surgery. X-rays may or may not show the heterotopic calcification. A repeat x-ray in two or three months may be helpful; by this time it may show the heterotopic calcification.
