Is Chronic Radiation an Effective Prophylaxis Against Cancer?

this article details the exposure of 10,000 Taiwanese residents to low-level radiation exposure over a 9 to 20 year period. The residents were exposed by accident due to the contamination of recycled steel with radioactive cobalt. The researchers found that those exposed (50 mSv / year, or 5 rem) had a dramatically lower cancer mortality rate than expected. COMMENT: exposure to low level radiation is hypothesized to be beneficial because it induces reparative mechanisms in the DNA. This concept is termed radiation hormesis.
