What is the predictive value of urinary symptoms for diagnosing urinary tract infection in women?
This study found that on dipstick urinary testing, the presence of nitrates increased the likelihood of a urinary tract infection by a factor of >5; pyuria increased the likelihood by >1.7, and the presence of both increased the risk by >7. Comment: an interesting clinical factor found to make a UTI less likely was pain upon lumbar fist percussion. [ Family Practice -- Abstracts: Medina-Bombardó et al. 20 (2): 103 ]
