Discontinuous Care Important in Primary Care Medicine
TITLE: Familiarity breeds neglect? Unanticipated benefits of discontinuous primary care
REF: Family Practice Vol. 20, No. 5, 503-507
http://fampra.oupjournals.org/cgi/c...stract/20/5/503
CONCLUSION: this study found that continuity of care - one of the major benefits of primary care medicine - sometimes hinders the diagnosis of diabetes. The authors states there is some truth to the saying that "familiarity breeds contempt" and that "discontinuous" care, as opposed to continuity of care, can sometimes be helpful.
COMMENT: this supports the liberal use of getting second opinions from other primary care providers.
