- Andrew Sullivan, in discussing the cartoon controversy 2/8/2006.

"Freedom of expression is much more important for us than the dogmas of religious fanatics"
- Yury Samodurov, in stating how the Sakharov Museum and Public Center would display the cartoons satirizing the founder of Islam that originally were published in a Danish newspaper, 2/7/2006.

"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers"

Article 11
Freedom of expression and information
1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions
and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless
of frontiers.
2. The freedom and pluralism of the media shall be respected.

- Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, 2000. (see attached)

"When extremists extract concessions from democracies on points of principle, either by blackmail or terror, democracies do not have long left."
- Charlie Hebdo editor Philippe Val wrote.

"We condemn the cartoons but this does not justify violence. These rioters are defaming the name of Islam."
- senior cleric Mohammed Usman, a member of the Ulama Council, Afghanistan's top Islamic organization.

There's no small irony in the fact that the cartoonist's critique of unhinged Islamist violence (most pointedly, a drawing of Mohammed with a bomb in his turban) has inspired unhinged Islamist violence.
- Rolling Stone Magazine

"We reject violence as a way to express discontent with what may be printed in a free press."
- George W Bush

"If free speech is to be meaningful, moreover, the right to it cannot shirk from embracing views that a majority -- or a minority -- finds distasteful, even on occasions bitterly so."
http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.asp...t_and_analysis/

"If newspapers are unable to publish controversial images and ideas without fear of retribution, then freedom of the press no longer exists. Indeed, freedom of the press only matters when journalists offend and anger some elements of society." ..... "So while the Danish cartoons may well have been offensive, the violent response to them is even more offensive and far more of a threat to the values of tolerance and pluralism, which are essential elements in any and every free state."
- Editorial: Free press is best defense, the Capital Times
http://www.madison.com/tct/opinion/...d=71882&ntpid=0

"I don't think that there is one single Arab country that really respects human rights."
