HESTON, Thomas F. MD, FAAFP

Tom Heston is the Senior Editor of the Internet Medical Journal and founder of the Internet Medical Association.

========================

Welcome to the Internet Medical Journal.

The Internet Medical Journal started out as the online journal Tom's Guide to Good Livin' in 1993. This was a project I undertook as a resident at the Oregon Health Sciences University program in nuclear medicine. In 1994 I moved to Vancouver Washington to continue my family practice residency at SW Washington Medical Center. As the the online journal project developed the name was changed to the Internet Medical Journal. Early in 1997 the domain MEDJOURNAL.COM was obtained along with an ISSN registration. We first started receiving multimedia articles in 2001.

Our mission is to provide peer-reviewed, relevant medical information to isolated and busy medical professionals. To accomplish that goal we not only have an editorial board, but we also allow registered members to post replies to the articles we publish. This method of online peer-review allows for greater discussion among physicians and other professionals that live in isolated areas and are unable to attend a university's grand rounds or go to a tiertiary care center's cancer review sessions.

By only allowing our staff to post the original articles ("threads") we strive to keep this site on-track, and thus useful to the busy clinician. Allowing members to respond to every article posted (to "reply" to the original thread) develops interaction, peer-review, and collegiality. We also allow members to vote on the quality of each article, on a scale of 1 to 5. This allows our members to help weed out poor articles or irrelevant information.

If you would like to join us as a member of our editorial board, please send email to editor@medjournal.com

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the Internet Medical Journal? Let us know by writing to feedback@medjournal.com
