Health and Drug Alert: Tegaserod (Zelnorm) for irritable bowel syndrome
this alert from the Canadian Medical Association Journal, states that about 1 out of 10 people on tegaserod (tradename=Zelnorm) will experience mild diarrhea, about 1 out of 250 will experience severe diarrhea (sometimes requiring hospital admission for dehydration), and intestinal ischemia in less than 1 in 11,000. The recommendation is to use this medication cautiously, and only in patients with moderate to severe irritable bowel syndrome.
