Meta-analysis Concludes FDG PET is Superior to Conventional Imaging in Lung Cancer

TITLE: Meta-analysis of the efficacy of positron emission tomography with F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose in lung tumors. Basis for discussion of the German Consensus Conference on PET in Oncology 2000

REF: Pneumologie. 2001 Aug;55(8):367-77 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/...8&dopt=Abstract

STUDY TYPE: meta-analysis

PATIENTS: patients with lung lesions and lung cancer

FINDINGS:
  • PET was superior to CT in evaluating lung lesions (96% sensitivity, 80% specificity, and 91% accuracy for PET).
  • In lung cancer patients, PET was superior to CT in determining nodal stage. For PET vs CT, sensitivity was 88% vs 65%, specificity was 92% vs 76%, and accuracy was 91% vs 73%.
  • In lung cancer patients, PET was superior to CT in determining metastatic stage. (94% sensitivity, 97% specificity, and 96% accuracy for PET)

CONCLUSION: FDG PET has a high diagnostic accuracy in lung cancer and the workup of lung lesions. PET is superior to all other imaging modalities in this setting.
