Visual assessment of regional left ventricular function from gated SPECT in risk stratification of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease: comparison with gated ejection fraction.
This abstract looked at 4527 consecutive patients undergoing nuclear cardiac SPECT examinations. The found that the visualliy calculated summed wall motion score correlated well with annualized cardiac event rates. The SWMS was calculated using a 5 region (anterior, inferior, lateral, septal, and apical walls) and 6 point (0=normal motion, 1=mild abnormality, 2=moderate abnormality, 3=severe abnormality, 4=akinesis, 5=dyskinesis) scale. Normal SWMS was defined as a score of less than or equal to 2. Those with a normal SWMS had an annualized event rate of 0.72% compared to 3.6% in those with an abnormal SWMS. Comment: we don't know from this abstract if an abnormal SWMS detected patients at risk that would not have been identified by a low left ventricular ejection fraction. However, it appears likely that the SWMS has prognostic value. [ Journal of Nuclear Cardiology January/February 2003, Part 2 • Volume 10 • Number 1 ]
