Prenatal Exposure to Maternal Smoking - a Good Thing for Women?

OBJECTIVE: determine whether or not maternal cigarette smoking reduces the risk of breast cancer in the female fetus exposed to the effects of smoking. Previous studies have shown that maternal cigarette smoking reduces estrogen levels, and thus may protect against the eventual development of breast cancer by the fetus. METHODS: a large database was evaluated. A total of 4031 women were in the study. RESULTS: The relative risk of breast cancer incidence was 0.49 among those women, while in utero, were exposed to maternal smoking. CONCLUSION: these findings are not conclusive, but support the hypothesis that in utero exposure to maternal cigarette smoke reduces breast cancer incidence.
