Guidelines for the Treatment of Otitis Media

Treatment guidelines for acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME) have been released by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network. Guidelines indicate that AOM patients should not be routinely treated with antibiotics. When antibiotics are prescribed, a 5 day course is recommended. OME patients should not receive antibiotics according to the guidelines. Comment: this is a nice summary of the evidence, noting that most cases of AOM and OME are self-limiting.
