A 4% increase in the real price of cigarettes found to reduce consumption by 5%
This study looked at cigarette consumption in Spain for the years 1965 to 2000, and found that an increase of 1% in the real price of cigarettes resulted in a decrease in consumption of 1.25%. COMMENT: this is probably the most effective method of decreasing cigarette consumption. Teenagers in particular are especially price sensitive, and an increase in price is likely to significantly decrease the number of teenagers that start smoking.
