Effects of Estrogen plus Progestin on Health-Related Quality of Life

This randomized, blinded study looked at 16608 postmenopausal women 50 to 79 years of age (mean,63) with an intact uterus, and randomly assigned them to receive estrogen plus progestin or placebo. After 1 year, those on estrogen plus progestin did no better than those on placebo in terms of general health, vitality, mental health, depressive symptoms, or sexual satisfaction. In the group that was followed for 3 years, there were no identified health - related quality of life differences found between those on placebo versus those on the estrogen/progestin combination. Comment: this article calls into question the value of estrogen/progestin, since the latest evidence suggests that there are very few benefits overall to this combination of hormone replacement therapy.
