Overweight, Obesity, and Mortality from Cancer in U.S. Adults
This study of over 900 000 US adults, found that death rates from all cancers combined were 52% higher for men and 62% higher for women with a body mass index of at least 40 (severe obesity). The researchers estimate that approximately 15% of all deaths from cancer are related to obesity. Comment: being overweight not only increases risk of cardiovascular disease; this study found that it also increases the risk of cancer. [ NEJM Volume 348:1625-1638 April 24, 2003 Number 17 ]
