Seat belt Use Decreases Risk of Motor Vehicle Death by 64%
This study compared the risk of death in motor vehicle accidents depending upon whether the passenger wore a seat belt or not. Expert crash investigators concluded that the relative risk was 0.36 (a 64% decreased risk). Police reported seat belt use was the same as that found by the crash investigators. Comment: seat belt use is just as important, and probably much more important, than air bags in preventing death. [ Inj Prev 2002;8:338-341 ]
