Smokers more likely to have increased intercostal muscle uptake on PET

OBJECTIVE: identification of patterns of uptake by the intercostal muscles in smokers versus non-smokers undergoing FDG PET scanning. METHODS: 96 PET/CT scans were retrospectively reviewed and intercostal muscle uptake analyzed. RESULTS: nearly 50% of the smolers had uptake localized to the intercostal muscles, compared to about 10% of the non-smokers. CONCLUSION: FDG uptake by the intercostal muscles is common, and observed more frequently in smokers. PMID: 15564151
