OBJECTIVE: editorial on the challenges of imaging the vulnerable plaque in coronary artery disease. METHODS: literature review, with emphasis on a recent article on FDG imaging of the heart. RESULTS: it is premature to utilize FDG to image the vulnerable plaque, however, there is the potential that FDG or another tracer will be able to do so in the future. CONCLUSION: research into imaging the vulnerable plaque should include nuclear medicine techniques. PMID: 15944528
