Systematic review of lipid lowering for primary prevention of coronary heart disease in diabetes

This meta-analysis concludes that the management of cholesterol levels in diabetics still remains uncertain due to methodologic problems with the majority of the research. The research does indicate that treatment with a statin is beneficial, but beyond that several questions remain unresolved. Comment: this statistical analysis calls into question the current recommendations for lipid management in diabetics. The take-home message is simply that more research needs to be done, which is almost a cliche. Still, it is nice to see a healthy dose of skepticism by these authors.[ BMJ 2003;326:528-529 ( 8 March )bmj.com Gami et al. 326 (7388): 528 ]
