Biologic Weapons of War

In addition to anthrax, the following are considered biologic threats:

BOTULISM: fatality rate is 5 - 10%. threat- moderate due to wide availability.

SMALLPOX: there is no treatment. Persons vaccinated in the past probably are not protected any more. Incubation period is 12 days, so an attack could spread through the population before people start getting symptoms.

PLAGUE: can be treated with antibiotics. There is no vaccine. Fatality rate in untreated cases is 90% plus. When treated, fatality rate is 5% or less.

TULAREMIA: overall mortality rate is 5%. There is a vaccine and it can be treated with antibiotics. It is highly contagious.

HEMORRHAGIC FEVER: Ebola virus falls in this category. There is no cure, vaccine or treatment. Fatality rate > 50%
