Sexual Activity and the Risk of Prostate Cancer
This study of 29342 men published in JAMA used a self administered questionnaire to examine the relationship between prostate cancer and ejaculation frequency. The researchers found that those having 21 or more ejaculations a month had a 11% decreased risk for prostate cancer compared to those having 4 to 7 a month. COMMENT: this study did not demonstrate a linear relationship between ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer, only that those with a high frequency had less cancer than those with a low frequency. Although the authors used a multivariate analysis technique, the meaning of this finding is unclear. For example, does it simply mean that those in a close relationship have less cancer? Or is there an organic cause of the decreased cancer rate?
