Aspirin in the Prevention of Colorectal Adenomas

This study randomized 1121 patients with a history of colorectal adenomas to either placebo, 81 mg of aspirin a day, or 325 mg of aspirin a day. Thos on the low dose (81 mg) aspirin had the lowest likelihood of having an adenoma on colonoscopy during the followup period of 1 to 3 years. The relative risk compared to placebo was 0.59 Comment: this study only looked at colorectal adenomas, not the overall effect of daily aspirin. There have been arguments that the risk of aspirin is not justified in the younger patient, however, this study is strong evidence that for those who have had a documented colorectal polyp, taking 81 mg of aspirin daily is probably a good thing.
