MIBI Thyroid Scanning Useful after a Non-diagnostic Fine Needle Aspiration
This study of 130 patients with a cold thyroid nodule on pertechnetate scanning found a 100% sensitivity for malignancy using Tc-99m sestamibi scans. 40% of patients had a non-diagnostic fine needle apiration. The authors conclude that a cystic lesion with a positive MIBI scan needs further investigation, even if the FNA is benign.
Combined use of fine-needle aspiration biopsy, MIBI scans and frozen section biopsy offers the best diagnostic accuracy in the assessment of the hypofunctioning solitary thyroid nodule.
