Household Work Found to Decrease the Risk of a Heart Attack

This study looked at 1204 men and 550 women who had suffered a myocardial infarction, and compared this group with 1538 men and 777 women who had NOT suffered a myocardial infarction. The groups were matched for sex, age, and hospital catchment area. Results were adjusted for several confounding factors. The researchers found that aerobic exercise, walking or standing at work, and doing demanding houshold work were all associated with a decrease in the risk of an acute myocardial infarction. Of note, lifting or carrying at work, and an occupational workload "perceived" to be strenuous, were both associated with an increased risk of an acute myocardial infarction. COMMENT: In this study, cleaning the house was good for your health.
