PET / CT in the Staging of NSC LUNG CANCER

TITLE: Staging of Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer with Integrated Positron-Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography

REF: NEJM Volume 348:2500-2507 June 19, 2003 Number 25. http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content...act/348/25/2500

STUDY TYPE: prospective trial

PATIENTS: 50 patients with proven or suspected NSCLC

FINDINGS: Integrated PET/CT was found to be more accurate than CT, PET, or visually correlated PET/CT scans. Integrated PET/CT identified additional information in 20 of 49 patients (41%).

CONCLUSION: Integrated PET/CT improves diagnostic accuracy compared to visually correlated PET and CT

COMMENT: It would be nice to see a good trial of software integration versus hardware integration. Software integration would make more sense than to simply mothball existing PET only units.
