Unhappy Lump behind ear

Dear Forum Members,

I have a recurring problem of lumps behind the ear. They I assume are cysts because they are soft to the touch, quite hot, and sometimes painful.

The swelling grows steadily over days until puss and blood seeps from the lump as can be seen in this picture I have taken of the lump behind my ear.

Eventually they 'come to a head' and burst so I press occasionally with tissue the area extracting out the fluid. In the end the swelling subsides as the puss is removed.

On inspection of this particular ear I observed a line of holes that run the scalp behind the ridge of the ear where previous lumps appeared and burst. There is also white scars in the same area. They seem to be getting lower and this recent lump behind my ear lobe is the lowest it has been.

One time the lump grew the length of the ear at the back, and eventually burst when I accidently hit my head. The smell was bad when it burst, and the usual puss and blood poured from the swelling.

I would like to know why when my ears get 'irritated' such as by vigourous washing behind the ears that these lumps appear? Should I bother to see a Doctor for medication if any is available as although uncomfortable and occasionally painful the lumps do reduce in time?

I guess what I want to know is is this one of those things I have to live with for the rest of my life or is it actually treatable?

Thanks in advance,

A. Obrzut
