A strategy to reduce cardiovascular disease by more than 80%
The authors of this paper propose a pill -- a silver bullet called the polypill -- that taken daily starting at age 55 would theoretically reduce cardiovascular disease by more than 80%. There are 6 ingredients: a statin (e.g. atorvastatin 10 mg); a beta-blocker, thiazide, and ace-inhibitor all at half of the standard dose; 0.8 mg of folic acid; and 75 mg of aspirin. Comment: the missing ingredient is exercise, if that could ever be put into a pill. [ bmj.com Wald and Law 326 (7404): 1419 ]
